How the limit works

Under RBI's rules on remittance of assets, an NRI can send abroad up to USD 1,000,000 in each financial year (Indian financial year, 1 April to 31 March) from NRO balances, including the proceeds of selling property in India. The limit is per person, across all banks, and unused room does not carry forward. Anything more needs RBI permission.

Current income such as rent, pension and dividends can be sent abroad after tax without using up this limit. NRE and FCNR(B) money is freely repatriable and never counts.

Forms

Before the bank releases the money, you file a declaration on Form 145 (formerly Form 15CA). When the taxable amount sent in the year is more than ₹5 lakh, a chartered accountant's certificate on Form 146 (formerly Form 15CB) is also needed. Banks also ask for their own remittance request form and proof of where the money came from.

Step-by-step instructions are in how to repatriate money from an NRO account and Forms 145 and 146 explained.
